TORONTO - Wheatfield Souldiers goaltender Tim Walker turned in his first-ever shutout as the team's regular netminder this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, leading the Burton's Boys' effort to hand the Brockton Rockets their second consecutive 3-0 loss. Meanwhile, the Gas Station Islanders held on to post a 3-2 victory over the Humiliation, wresting away 2nd place in the UUHA standings from the Black Wizards in the process.
A scoreless 1st period led to an almost equally barren 2nd frame before Grant Paley combined with linemates Jon Weier and Jay Jalonen to put the Souldiers up 1-0 with just two minutes remaining on the clock. An early 2nd period goal would make it 2-0, this time with Kyle Welton lighting the lamp behind Rockets minder Jonathan Dickson. Souldiers points leader Brian Bentley and defenceman Marc Couture were awarded assists on that play. Bentley would step into the spotlight and onto the gamesheet once again later in the 3rd, combining with Welton and Rodney Merchant for some extra insurance with five minutes to go. Those last 300 seconds were largely uneventful, though, as the Souldiers booked their third-consecutive win and returned to .500 for the first time since mid October of last year. The team now sits in 4th place with a 4-4-1 ledger.
Cam Collyer had a pair of unassisted goals for the Gas Station Islanders, while Luke Scheer potted two of his own for the Humiliation, as two of the top three teams in the UUHA standings met for their second match-up of the season. The first, played back in late November of 2022, ended up a 5-4 win for the Humiliation. This time, however, the skate would end up on the other foot as the Isles registered their sixth win of the season, the difference - aside from the four aforementioned tallies - being Eddie Belanger's fifth goal of the campaign, scored just 29 seconds into the middle frame. Veteran Gasser Steve Boyd assisted on that one. As for Humiliation helpers, Sean Morrison, Nick Hooper, Shawn Star and Luke Moretti each qualified for the assist column.
The Humiliation, along with the Rockets, will take next weekend off to rest and reflect, while GSI is scheduled for a 9:00 pm contest versus the Beau's Beer Hack. The 8:00 pm match sees the Souldiers playing host to the Jokers. Both games will transpire within the well-appointed confines of UCC.
