TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers opened up an early 4-0 lead over the Humiliation this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College en route to a 6-2 decision over the first-place opponent. Despite the loss, the Black Wizards claimed the UUHA's President's Cup for finishing out the 2022/23 Regular Season in top spot. It's the first time the Humiliation has ever won the honour. Meanwhile, the Jokers improved their record with a 5-2 win over the Gas Station Islanders, and the Brockton Rockets and Beau's Beer Hack skated to a 3-3 draw.
Saturday's results set the initial stage for the 2023 UUHA Playoffs, which begin this coming Saturday night with a pair of Quarterfinal games featuring teams finishing the Regular Season in 3rd through 6th place. The 1st-place Humiliation, and the 2nd-place Wheatfield Souldiers will enjoy a bye through to the Semifinals, scheduled for the following weekend. Those games will include the two Quarterfinal winning teams, as well, the lowest-seeded of which will play the Humiliation, while the other squad faces off against the Wheatfield Souldiers. A trip to the Championship Final will be on the line in those two contests.
This year's Playoffs will be played out in a condensed format relative to most previous UUHA postseasons. All six league teams are guaranteed a minimum of two Playoff games, while two of the six teams will play three games on their way to either the Championship Final or Bronze Medal Game. The full postseason games schedule can be seen by toggling Seasons (above) to 2023 Playoffs and filtering by month. The 2023 Playoffs wrap up on Saturday, April 15. All Playoff games take place at Upper Canada College.
If this year's Playoffs seem shorter than usual, it's because they are. Relative to previous, pre-pandemic UUHA seasons, the 2023 Playoffs are approximately half the length, in accordance with the desired overall number of 2022/23 games as determined by the UUHA Board of Giveners prior to the start of the 2022/23 hockey season.
